What Could You Learn From A Flea?
Posted on 21. Feb, 2010 by Glen in Mind Set
It’s amazing
where we sometimes get the most valuable lessons. Zig Ziglar discussed one of these lessons using a jar full of fleas.
You see fleas are continually jumping around from one area to another, one animal to another, and sometimes…even on people, but that’s a whole different subject.
So anyway…they did this experiment where they placed a bunch of fleas in a jar. Of course, the fleas jumped out of the jar. Then they placed the lid on the jar.
For awhile the fleas continued to try to jump out of the jar and you could hear the fleas hitting the lid of the jar. But after a few minutes, there were fewer and fewer fleas hitting the top of the jar…until the noise stopped.
The fleas continued to jump, but they would only jump a little below the lid, so not to hit their tiny heads. J Then they took the lid off the jar so the fleas could freely jump out of the jar. But that didn’t happen. The fleas continued to jump as if the lid was still on.
Even though there was a whole world out there waiting for them, they just wouldn’t jump any higher as if the lid was still on. The fleas learned very quickly after feeling the pain of hitting the lid, they shouldn’t jump so high. The fleas quickly found a comfort zone when the lid was applied to the jar and even when the lid was taken off, not a single flea would jump out of the comfort zone.
So what can we learn from this example? Just like the fleas, we all have our comfort zones. Just like fleas, the pain of coming out of those comfort zones can paralyze us so we miss out on a whole world of opportunities and adventures.
We all have our comfort zones, but successful entrepreneurs jump outside their comfort zones because they understand there is a whole new world outside of that comfort zone.
So how do you get outside the comfort zone? You align yourself with those that are already successfully doing what you want to do.
The problem is that most people align themselves with people inside the same comfort zone. Another way to look at it, is if you are a flea and you want to get out of the jar, don’t ask someone who is in the jar how to get out. You need to find someone who has already jumped out of the comfort zone to find out how they got where you want to be.
The point I am trying to make here is on your road to success you are going to find you will need to learn some new talents. Some of these new skills will be uncomfortable at first, but your comfort zone will change as you jump outside the jar. It always does. Just think back in your own life. The first time you rode a bicycle, the first time you drove a car or any other firsts in your life. You didn’t ask someone who didn’t know how to ride a bike or drive, you asked someone who already knew how to do it. Apply this same strategy on your road to success.
So in summary, your journey to success will take you outside of your comfort zone. Don’t listen to those that are in your same situation, rather align yourself with those that already have what you want and learn from their experiences. The pain of moving out of your comfort zone is short term and the rewards are staggering.

Glen, excellent post and I loved the example you provided about the fleas!
Agree with what you’re saying… get past the pain threshhold, move past the comfort zone, and allow folks to offer support who have already been there.

Hi Glen,
I really enjoyed reading this blog post.
It is true that if you do not go out of your comfort zone your success level will be affected.

Glen I love reading your posts because they always provide excellent value and this is a fine example of this. Loved the fleas story. I will make sure I definitely seek out fleas that are outside the jar!

Vivid imagery Glen.
I’m convinced most people go to the grave residing in the jar even thought the lid has been removed.
The funny thing about fear is that it’s a series of energy waves in the mind. Kinda silly to think that little waves of energy compose the mountains we place in front of ourselves, right?
When feeling uncomfortable, be thankful. You’re Living instead of just being alive.
